Flying Eagles Win Their 7th AYC Title

Nigeria’s U-20 men’s football team, The Flying Eagles defeated host, Senegal 1-0 in Dakar yesterday to win the seventh CAF African Youth Championship title. Nigeria has won the tournament six times in the past: 1983, 1985, 1987, 1989, 2005 and 2011. Bernard Bulbwa was the hero as his lone goal was enough to seal victory for his side. Nigeria went in front after just 18 minutes when Bulbwa struck a powerful volley at the edge of the area and past the hapless Ibrahim Sy into the Senegalese goal post. It was end-to-end stuff which saw the Senegalese create so many chances but Nigerian keeper, Joshua Enaholo was up for the challenge. Nigeria almost doubled their lead in the 87th minute but Ibrahim Sy pulled off a fantastic save to stop Ifeanyi Matthew’s goal-bound shot. However, Nigeria held on to their slim advantage to be crowned Africa’s best U-20 football team for the seventh time.
