Five Common Applications Of Artificial Intelligence You Should Know

In the tech world, there are more and more innovations than one can mention in a breathe every month. Recently, the word Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) has gained more prominence than in previous years following its inception. On our Top 5 series this week, I will be sharing with you five (5) applications of AI that we have heard of or relate with in our everyday life. Hopefully, I will be able to share with you more AI innovations in different aspects of society. Let’s dig deep!

The year 2018 was a milestone in the tech industry as it welcomed the emergence of platforms and applications using AI and ML in extensive ways that did not exist previously. These technology tools (AI and ML) had extensive usage beyond the internet and software industry to other verticals in the society such as publishing, marketing, automobile amongst others. Top tech organizations in the world (IBM, Google and Facebook) have continued to invest heavily in the research and development for the application of these tools in ways that can benefit humans. The following are applications of AI you should be aware of:

Facial recognition:

Facial recognition is an AI-based application that identifies an individual using patterns in their facial structure and minute details in a digital image. It is used on Facebook for tagging friends and family in pictures, by law enforcement and for biometric identification. Today, smartphones now have facial recognition cameras for unlocking the phone.

Voice-based applications:

Siri and Alexa are digital assistants that understand human voice and questions and provide information from the internet based on request or execute certain tasks such as scheduling, playing a song from a playlist, making a call etc.

Predictive technology:

Netflix uses predictive technology to suggest movies to customers based on their previous reactions to other movies while Google uses the same predictive technology in the search suggestion for other results the user may be looking for.

Chatbots:

Chatbots like Kudi.ai, Leo of UBA use AI application to provide services and customer support. These chatbots use the popular social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp to resolve queries and provide a wide range of services like airtime purchase, and bills payment.

Traffic updates:

With the prevailing increase in rural-urban migration, more and more people move to the city and this causes an increase in congestion and traffic. With AI algorithm, Uber, Google and other traffic agencies in Lagos, provide real-time traffic updates, estimated time of arrival and predict the amount each ride will cost.

The disturbing question on most people’s mind is “Will AI take away jobs?” I believe the right answer is ‘Maybe’ because so many factors are involved. To be on the safe side, it is best to move with the changing tide and create your own niche. Subsequently, we will be seeing more applications of AI in different societal verticals like banking, automobile, health etc. Until then, click on the share button in the article to share this opportunity with your friends and drop a comment on this post to tell us what topics or opportunities you would like to know or read about here.
