FIFA World Cup: Eagles Are Determined To See It Through – Rohr

With the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup only a few months away, preparations from every team participating has taken a rather serious turn, and for Nigeria, it’ll be strictly business when the Super Eagles take on Poland and Serbia in two weeks.

Determined for gold

Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, assured Nigerians that his team is more than ready for the task ahead. Unlike other years where the Super Eagles have failed to make it past the group stages of the tournament, coach Rohr said his team is not just determined to make it past the group stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup tournament, but this time, the Eagles have their eyes on the gold.
Every team going to the World Cup in Russia has a dream of winning it. But to be realistic, we believe in our dream and we are working so hard to achieve it.’’ — Rohr told reporters at the FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour event in Lagos.
The best record the Nigeria senior men’s team have made in any FIFA World Cup competition is the Round of 16’ (in 1994, 1998 and 2014). Nigeria was drawn into a ‘group of death’ with Argentina, Croatia and Iceland. From past experiences with Argentina, it is not far fetched to think that the Super Eagles have their work more than cut out for them if they will indeed beat a ‘Messi-full’ Argentina. Croatia on the other hand will prove quite ‘the stubborn young-adult’ and a tough nut to crack for the Eagles, and the Eagles should be weary of the Icelandics (underdogs of this group); this team is full of surprises and may want to spring one on Nigeria.

Friendlies

In the friendly line up, Nigeria will slug it out with Poland on March 23 before taking on Serbia four days later. Nigeria will also face DR Congo in Abuja on May 28. On June 2, the Super Eagles will clash with England in one of the most anticipated pre-World Cup matches at the Wembley stadium before a final bout with Czech Republic on June 6.   Feature image photo credit: premiumtimesng.com
