Fela may have been dead for close to a generation now but it is no doubt that he is the most influential artiste from his time there has ever been. For a man who was not so appreciated when he used to grace the stage with his dramatic gyrations and incendiary lyrics, he has amassed a lot of accolades and praise in death. In what would seem like the latest in his many post mortem accolades, Fela is now up for induction into the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame’s 2021 Induction Class and in a very interesting turn of events, Twitter users and Nigerians on other social media platforms have made sure that Abamieda’s name is top of the list where it was close to the bottom and squeezed negligibly in between names like LL Cool J and Todd Rundgren. In almost magical fashion, Nigerians mobilized to push Baba 70’s name right up to number one and as we speak the votes stand at over 100,000 and he is ahead of the second-placed Tina Turner by more than 30,000 votes. The Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame was established in 1983 as a museum and monument to the glorious past of rock music. Over time, its scope has expanded to subsume music in general although with a particular bias for rock stars and bands. Amongst its inductees are famous names such as Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, Marvin Gaye, the Rollingstones and the Supremes. Fela is the only Nigerian and African on the list this year. To vote Fela, log on to https://vote.rockhall.com/ and vote. You can only vote once each day via the same email account so do it as much as you can. The first five names according to the number of votes will be considered alongside other criteria for considering inductees for this year, so voting gives s Fela a bigger chance at this.
