Facebook Announces the Messenger Lite App for Android

In 2015, Facebook launched a lighter version of its social networking app, and now, the software giant has announced Messenger Lite, which is a stripped down version of the Messenger app. The app is primarily built for regions with poor internet connectivity and places where most people use basic or entry level Android phones for mobile communication.

The messenger lite app is roughly 10MB in size and is easy to install and use with little or no lags. Users will have access to all of Messenger’s core features like messaging, sending and receiving photos and links and cool stickers. Also, in addition to not being mobile data hungry (like its siblings), the lite app is also a small eater when it comes to battery consumption.

The Messenger Lite app uses the same bolt logo as the traditional Messenger app, but with reverse colors – The lite app has a blue colored bolt with a white chat bubble background, while Messenger has a White bolt with a blue chat bubble background.

Facebook already has over a billion users and is definitely looking to connect the next billion users (who may not reside in developed countries) to its mega social networking platform, and they’ve realized that most of these users do not have access to good internet connection, neither do they possess the means to own high-end smartphones.

The app will be available on Android since it is focused on entry-level Android phones. iPhone users may be left out of the party since there are no entry-level iPhones out there. The app is available in countries like Kenya, Tunisia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Venezuela, and according to Facebook, other countries should look forward to getting the app in the months ahead.
