Mr. Yakubu Dati, the General Manager, Corporate Communications, FAAN said in an interview in Abuja yesterday that it has deployed adequate security at the airports across the country along with anti-terrorism squads.
According to him, Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria has also positioned strategically sniffer dogs, surveillance cameras and plain clothed detectives to tighten security at the airports. He said FAAN had installed seven new X-ray scanning machines at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos and five others at the cargo basement of the international terminal. Also at the Hajj, its cargo terminals and airport domestic, security equipment has been installed.
Dati said the installation was also carried out at different levels in Benin, Ilorin and Eungu airports, adding that the projects were in addition to existing security equipment at the airports.
He explained that all the other airports in the country are presently undergoing installations including cargo screening machines, carry-on screening machines and hand-held metal detectors. He continued, “The 3-D body scanners, hold baggage screening machines and walk-through metal detectors are also on ground. The equipment [we have gotten] will ensure that illegal and unapproved luggage is not loaded in the aircraft and also help check the pilfering of luggage.”
He said the scanners would help ensure increased security surveillance of outgoing baggage destined for aircraft bulk hold and that the new security equipments are part of the expansion and remodeling of airports across the country.
