Super Falcons star, Asisat Oshoala, has given a different opinion regarding the debate for equal pay for both the male and female national football teams in Africa. The three-time African Female Footballer of the Year believes that agitations for equal pay is not top priority for African women national teams.
The campaign for equal pay gained huge global support after the USA women’s team engaged the US Soccer Federation in a legal war over the issue. Captain of the Nigerian female side, Desire Oparanozie, fueled the campaign in Nigeria after demanding that the Falcons should earn what the Super Eagles earn during the recently held Ladies in Sports Conference in Lagos.
Oshoala, who made history as the first female African footballer to score in a UEFA Women’s Champions League Final in May 2019, feels women in football in Africa are confronted with more fundamental challenges that need to be resolved instead of equal pay.
It is a good thing that this demand caught FIFA’s attention… But in Africa, we have other pressing issues to deal with in our football. We need to deal with our structures, facilities, and [other] of issues before talking about equal pay… [We should instead] focus on problems affecting female football in Africa first.
