Entry Requirements For 2018 African Championships, Asaba

The entry requirements for participating at the 2018 African Championships scheduled to run from August 1 to 5, in Delta State, Nigeria, have been released. Interested Athletes have until the 8th of July 2018 to successfully complete all the requirements to qualify for the championship. The African Championships is a continental biennial event organized by the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA). The championships had its maiden edition in 1979 and it was first organized intermittently with nine editions held in fourteen years until 1993. Since the tenth edition of the championships, the event took a two-year interval turn and is always held in the same year as the Summer Olympics. Since the beginning of the championships, Nigeria has hosted the event just once, Lagos in 1989 at the National Stadium. The 2018 edition billed for Asaba Township Stadium will make it the second time Nigeria will host the championship. Despite hosting just one championship so far, Nigerian Athletes ‘wey no dey carry last’ have successfully dominated the medal table eight times since Dakar, 1979. Other times the Nigerian team was dominant include; Cairo’ 1985, Annaba’ 1988, Lagos’ 1989, Cairo’ 1990, Yaounde 1996, Dakar’ 1998, and Porto-Novo’ 2012. The only other country that evenly matches Nigeria on the medal table is South Africa, with a total of eight wins so far. The 2018 Championships which will be hosted in Asaba, Delta State will be used to select Africa’s team to the 2018 IAAF Continental Cup, Ostrava, the Czech Republic which will run from September 8 to September 9.
