Eko Moves, Exhibition Celebrating Photography, Dance, and Lagos Opens on the 30th of November 2014

Eko Moves, an exhibition celebrating photography by Yetunde Ayeni Babaeko and Dance by the Society for Performing Arts in Nigeria (SPAN), opens on the 30th of November, 2014 at the Wheatbaker from 2pm – 6pm and runs until February 15, 2015.   Eko Moves is a visual chronicle of a two-year journey by the German trained fashion photographer, Yetunde Ayeni Babaeko which touches the very heartbeat of creativity in the vibrant, ever unfolding city of Lagos, a city of contradictions.   Eko’s essence, its character, its people and its creative spirit is captured in Ayeni Babaeko’s 25 photographs presenting professional dancers of the leading dance group of SPAN to leave their mirrored studios and dance through the markets and shanty towns of Lagos for the people of Lagos.   What we find captured in these photographs are dancers who have released themselves and their creativity to a curious Lagos. She captures the dance and the unsuspecting audience as they gather to watch the spectacle. What we see in these photographs is sheer beauty and grace but also defiance and exuberance. The photographic and performance artistry is both hauntingly honest and beautiful, political and existential. it captures both the rage and the calm of the very core of Eko.   To be a part of the opening, RSVP is essential at africanartspectrum@gmail.com
