Here’s a chance for students with great visual arts skills to show the world what they’ve got.
This month, Lagos State will be giving young artists from its tertiary institutions three days and a fantastic setting to display their works to the public. It will be hosting the Rasheed Gbadamosi Eko Art Expo, an event which aims to unveil the budding talents of Lagos art to visual art curators, art promoters, enthusiasts and industry players in the architectural, environmental and urban development design, and hotel and tourism sectors.
The Eko Art Expo seeks to raise the profile of visual arts coming out of the institutions of higher learning in Lagos, and foster an art-savvy culture in what is one of Africa’s largest art hubs. Named after the late art enthusiast and former minister of national planning, Rasheed Gbadamosi (who died in November 2016), the festival could become a reference point for art lovers and aficionados who are looking for what’s new on the arts scene of Lagos’ tertiary institutions.
The theme of this year’s event is Lagos for All, and captures in words the desire of its organizers to celebrate “artworks that depict the multi-cultural nature of Lagos.”
Students interested in taking part can apply via the event’s website; exhibition slots will be given to candidates whose applications and previous artworks meet the organizers’ standards. Works to be exhibited will cover the following areas:
-Traditional fine arts (drawing, paintings, sculpture, photography)
-Architectural, urban and landscape
-Works in wood, metal, paper, ceramics e.t.c.
