Ekevwo And Amusan Win At World Athletics Continental Tour Gold Meet

Amusan and Ekevwo won big ahead of the Nigerian Athletics Championship in Benin City.

The Nigerian athletic duo of Raymond Ekevwo and Tobilola Amusan were impressive at the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meet, the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland.

In the men’s 100m events, Ekevwo who finished 4th in the 22nd edition of the African Athletics Championship in Mauritius, ran an impressive 10.23 seconds to win the event ahead of Dutch athlete Doris Van Gool (10.38s) and Finnish sprinter Samuel Purola (10.43s).

Sprint hurdler and Africa’s 100m champion Tobilola Amusan also ran a new Personal Season Best of 12.57 seconds to win at the Continental Tour Gold meet ahead of Britany Anderson from Jamaica (12.59s) and Netherland’s Nadine Visser (12.72s). It will be recalled that Amusan retained her 100m African championship crown in Mauritius after running a wind-aided 12.57s in the final of the 100m hurdle at the continental showpiece. She has now won the African Games and African Championship titles in her career.

Amusan and Ekevwo have reached the qualification standard for the World Athletics Championship slated to hold in Oregon, the USA from July 15-24, 2022. However, both athletes will have to participate in the Nigerian Championship that will hold from June 21-23rd in Benin City, Edo State. Ekevwo will be on the quest to win his first national title in Benin City while Amusan will be aiming to defend her crown after emerging the champion of the 100m hurdles in the last edition held at the Yaba College of Technology sports ground in Yaba, Lagos State.
