Eaglets Settle For a Draw

The Golden Eaglets played out a thrilling 3-all draw with Sweden in their second group game at the U-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. Kelechi Iheanacho, who scored four goals against Mexico in their first game, couldn’t add to his tally. He turned provider for Eaglets two goals, setting up Isaac Success and Taiwo Awoniyi for the team’s first and third goals respectively. The Swedes went ahead with two goals by Valmir Berisha, who grabbed an eight minute brace, scoring in the 11th and 19th minutes. Isaac Success, with his second goal of the tournament, reduced the deficit and Eaglets went into the break 2-1 down. Eaglets equalised just three minutes after the restart with a goal by Musa Yahaya. Mirza Halvadzic restored the lead for Sweden but a late goal from Taiwo Awoniyi meant both teams had an equal share of the spoils. Both teams are locked on four points but Eagles lead on goal difference, thanks to the six goals they scored in their opening game against Mexico. Their next match will be against Iraq on Friday at the Al-Rashid Stadium (Al Ahli Stadium), Dubai. A point will guarantee their progression to the next stage while a win will confirm them as Group F winners.
