D’Tigress Star, Akhator Ready For FIBA Women’s World Cup

Evelyn Akhator
Nigerian Professional Women’s Basketball Star and Dallas Wings Player, Evelyn Akhator is sure of a remarkable performance by D’Tigers at the forthcoming 2018 FIBA Women’s World Cup on Tenerife Spain. The draw, which was held one week ago at the Teatro Leal, San Cristobal de la Laguna on Tenerife Island, grouped D’Tigers with Turkey, Argentina and Australia in Group B. It will certainly not be an easy run for Africa’s  Champions, as they will be going against renowned teams like Australia, who were World Cup champions in 2006, and have finished in the third position on three occasions in 1998, 2002 and 2014. Argentina will be making their ninth appearance at the World Cup. While the Turkish side will be making their second appearance at the Women’s World Cup after finishing fourth at their debut in 2014. Akhator, who was quoted in a media statement released by Nigerian Basketball Federation stated thus, “I think it will be a great outing for us being drawn alongside Australia, Turkey and Argentina. I have watched the Turkish national team play and I am confident that we will surmount them. On the other hand Australia and Argentina, we will give a good fight with all hopes of winning” “A build-up on our previous success at the AfroBasket would surely bear fruitful result.” She continued. “I am excited and confident about our position in the pool drawing for Spain. It moves us one step closer to our goal of securing a medal in the 2018 FIBA World Cup.” She added. The tournament will begin on the 22nd of September to 30th September. The Group stage games have been scheduled for Tenerife Sports Pavilion Santiago Martin in San Cristóbal de La Laguna and the Palacio Municipal de Deportes “Quico Cabrera” in Santa Cruz. While the Final rounds will take place at the Tenerife Sports Pavilion Santiago Martin.
