Clearly regarded as one of the teams that would crash out of the tournament in its early stages, the world watched in awe as the Nigeria women’s basketball team,
D’Tigress, made history right in Tenerife at the
2018 FIBA Women’s World Cup.
Before D’Tigress proved Africa’s strength to the world, no African team had ever broke through the group stage of the FIBA world cup, more-so, have a close shot at winning the world title.
In a daring display of skill and resolve, D’Tigress faced Team USA and came close to taking the game, however, experience was on the side of the defending champions who ended Nigeria’s run for the cup.
In their classification bout on Sunday, D’Tigress lost to Canada (72-73), and have finished the tournament in
eight position overall — a massive step-up from their previous rank.

Canada dominated the first quarter of the game, 21-17, but in the second quarter, Nigeria’s
brave girls rallied back to the lead making 19 points against Canada’s 9.
In the third quarter, both teams put up a thrilling fight to stay in the game, ending the quarter tied at 19 points each. The Canadians ably took the fourth quarter with 24 points to Nigeria’s 18 to end the game 73-72.
Though they could not win the basketball trophy, D’Tigress have won the hearts of many around the world, and one can only imagine how well the Nigerian team will do in the next FIBA Women’s World Cup.
