The first Nigerian Satire Festival holds in Abuja on November 16- 17 to celebrate the United Nation’s International Day of Tolerance with the theme “Satire: Society’s Mirror”. It would take place in the ballroom, Sheraton, Ladi Kwali, Abuja FCT Nigeria.
It is an annual event aimed to promote satire as a tool for dialogue and social commentary, highlighting social issues without offending sensibilities. The event is aimed at promoting meaningful and productive conversations between the government and its citizens, it is organized by The Arts and Civics Table Organization.
A Satirist uses laughter to discuss situations they find unacceptable and are in need of a change, and it is clear that this festival according to its organizer, Ose Aneinh, the co-founder of TACT, would create a veritable platform for the promotion and deepening of civic engagement and social discourse through the use of satire.
The activities lined up for the début festival include satire and art presentation by Nigerian leading satirists, such as, Okechukwu Ofili, aka OFILI SPEAKS; Mike Asukwo, Dr. Damages among others. The roasts have journalists, members of civil society organizations, selected satirists, political office holders, with a satire- themed cartoon and art exhibition that runs throughout the two-day event and a stage play “Made in Nigeria” to be
performed by Dike Chukwumerije.
