When actor, Charles Okocha, put up the video on picture-sharing website, Instagram, on 9th April 2018, little did he know that the “I deserve some accolades” video would go viral. The video showed the Nollywoodactor running out of a car into an empty street with a bottle of wine in his hand, screaming “I deserve some accolades!”
Many social media users within and outside Nigeria soon began to replicate the video with different funny nuances, which they uploaded with various hashtags including #GiveMeMyAccolades, #IDeserveSomeAccolades, #NunuGang and #WeGlobal.
The meme which already went viral few days after, took a political dimension after President Mohammadu Buhari’s comment about Nigerian youths being lazy. More young people took to social media demanding to be given accolades for their hard work.
Notable people who have done videos or used the phrase include charismatic presidential aspirant, Fela Durotoye, singers Kcee, D’banj, Nikki Laoye, Skiibii, Cinematographer, Akorede Alli, comedian, EmmaOhMaGod, Instagram personality Lasisi Elenu, Nedu of Wazobia FM, popular blogger Tunde Ednut, American wrestler Stephanie McMahon. Even Corporate organisations like MTN Nigeria, Durex Nigeria, Checki Nigeria are not left out.
Riding on the popularity of the meme, Okocha, who also goes by the name Igwe 2pac or Amoshine has announced that he will be releasing a song titled “Accolades” which will feature Wonder Tha Hypeman who presumably is the hypeman who can usually be heard urging him on in his videos.
