Do It Yourself: Buttercream Frosting

If you’ve never made it, you’d consider it a chore. In reality, buttercream frosting is super easy to make. The ingredients required are few and you only need your hand or stand mixer to make it.

This buttercream frosting has a great consistency; it pipes perfectly. Today’s recipe is vanilla flavoured but this buttercream frosting is a great base for other frosting flavours. This recipe makes about two and a half cups of frosting. So, it’s enough to frost twelve to fourteen cupcakes. The heavy cream in this recipe can be substituted with milk but it won’t be as creamy as it would be if heavy cream is used.
Ingredients

1 Cup of Unsalted Butter

3 cups of Powdered Sugar

2- 3 Tablespoons of Heavy Cream

2 Teaspoons of Pure Vanilla Extract

A Pinch of Salt

Method of Preparation

If your butter is frozen, then, the first step in making this buttercream frosting is to take the butter out of the deep freezer. This needs to be done at least an hour before time. This will ensure that the frosting you make will be smooth and creamy.

However, if your butter is already at room temperature, then, the first step will be to put the butter in a hand mixer or stand mixer fitted with a paddle and beat. Once it’s nice and smooth, add in the powdered sugar, a cup at a time. Please note that sifting the powdered sugar is optional; so, you can omit it if you’d rather not. Once the butter and powdered sugar are well combined, add the heavy cream, the vanilla extract and the salt. Scrape down the sides of the bowl then mix till the ingredients are well combined. Just like that, your icing is ready to use. You can pipe this frosting onto your cupcakes or use it to decorate a cake.

Before we wrap this up, it must be stated that this icing can be made in advance. It can be stored in the refrigerator if it’ll be used within three days of production. Otherwise, it should be frozen. This frosting will freeze well for up to three months. Please note that the icing must be covered tightly before refrigeration. It must also be brought to room temperature and mixed well before use.
