Nigeria’s Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOS) have announced their support for proposals to provide free electricity to Nigerians. The Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED) says its members will deliver power nationwide without any cost to consumers, for a period of two months.

According to the Director of Research and Advocacy for ANED, Sunday Oduntan, the DISCOS were willing to wave bills for a limited period, in order to lessen the financial burden cast on Nigerians by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The House of Representative had earlier introduced a new stimulus bill, which, among other things, proposed the supply of electricity to Nigerians without charge for two months.
In a statement, Mr. Oduntan explained that the plan was still in the works and that details would be released later.
He said that the DISCOS “recognize the challenging effects of the coronavirus on the economic and daily lives” of its customers and that they were aligning with the National Assembly’s plans to ease the difficulties faced by Nigerians in the current period.

He also commended the Federal legislators and the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) for introducing the initiative, and promised that the DISCOS were ready to work with them to achieve it.
The Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company had earlier halted the disconnection of defaulting consumers from the power grid for a month, as restrictions on movement in Lagos demanded by the Federal Government came into effect.R
