Did You Know? Nollywood Movies are Eligible for Consideration in the Oscars

Time Magazine

Nigeria became eligible to submit one film for consideration under the Foreign Language Film Oscar Award in 2015. In that year, a Nigerian Oscars selection Committee was approved by the Academy. This award is also called the Oscar Award for Best International Feature Film.

For Chineze Anyaene, producer and director of the 2010 drama film, Ije, and a member of the Nigerian selection committee, “This is a great opportunity for Nigeria to have a voice in the international film arena.”

Every year, countries with an approved selection committee have one chance to be considered for the Foreign Language Film Award Oscar. Whatever Nollywood film is selected for each year will compete with films submitted by up to 85 other countries. At the end of it all, only 5 films will be selected, and one emerges the winner of the Foreign Language Film Award. To qualify, the dialogue of a submitted film must be predominantly in a foreign language.

Nollywood is yet to give us an incredible film with dialogue in an indigenous language that might be worthy of this Oscar Award. But who knows? With Nollywood’s achievements so far, something might just be in the works.
