Cupcakes are mini cake perfections. They are delicious and portable. They are easy to bake and decorate. They even come in different flavours and are widely served at birthdays and weddings. Cupcakes are said to make everything better.
So, today, we’ll be sharing fun facts about Cupcakes that you’d find amusing and enlightening. Here they are:
They are as Old as Methuselah: Are you surprised? I certainly am. Anyways, the cupcakes we enjoy today have a long history. They have been around since the late 1700s. The first mention of cupcakes can be traced to Amelia Simms. There was a recipe notation in her American Cookery of “a cake to be baked in small cups.”
They were Originally Called Number Cakes: People of God, it might interest you to know that cupcakes were originally called number cake or 1234 cake. That’s because the bakers found this an easy way to remember the measurement of the four main ingredients in the cake recipe: one cup of butter, two cups of sugar, three cups of flour, and four eggs. The first official use of the phrase, the cupcake was made by a nineteenth-century author and homemaker, Eliza Leslie, in her Receipt Cookbook.
It was Made Cup by Cup: As you already know, cupcakes were in existence long before the arrival of the muffin tins and the cupcake pans. In the early days, they were baked in small individual pottery bowls called ramekins. Teacups and ceramic cups were also used. Hope you can now see that the name cupcake was an apt description of its mould.
They were not Frosted Initially: The Hostess Bakery started the mass production of cupcakes in 1919. But those cupcakes were not frosted. They were just flavoured with dried fruits and spices. Cupcakes were first decorated with frosting in the 1920s. The first cupcake frosting was buttercream.
There’s a Guinness World Record Cupcake: This wonder cupcake was baked in the year 2011 by Georgetown Cupcakes, USA. The cupcake was 4 feet tall and weighed 1,176.6 kilograms. It also had over two million calories. The oven and pan for this cupcake were custom-made for the attempt. The pan was unassembled easily in order to prove that the cupcakes were fully baked and freestanding with no support like the small cupcakes.
There’s Cupcake Eating Champion: Pat ‘Deepdish’ Bertoletti is the world’s undisputed Cupcake Eating Champion. He ate 72 cupcakes in under six minutes. I trowey salute for this guy. May God not allow me to become this type of champion.
There’s a Cupcake ATM: This deliciously ingenious idea was conceived by Sprinkles Bakery, the world’s first cupcake-only bakery in 2012. The Beverly Hills, California-based Cupcake Bakery Chain developed a hole-in-the-wall ATM that dispenses cupcakes 2-4-7. This ATM holds up to six hundred fresh cupcakes at a time. It’s continuously restocked throughout the day with freshly baked cupcakes.
That’s the Cupcakes fun facts for today. When next you have Cupcakes, I hope you‘ll remember one of these fun facts and I hope the thought will make you smile.
