COVID-19 Flight Resumption Update

Domestic flights have been scheduled to reopen on June 21st. Travellers are also looking forward to resumption dates for international flights. Initially, we shared the plans of the aviation industry as airports plan to reopen. Today, we will be reviewing the updated flight preparation plan by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, in line with the Federal Government’s directives for passengers.

Passenger Protocol Around the Airport

Below are some new flight resumption protocol for passengers to adhere to when airports resume:
  1. All passengers are encouraged to come to the airport 3 hours before their flight due to the new COVID-19 safety checks.
  2. Non-travellers will not be allowed into the airport terminal building.
  3. Maintain 6 feet (2m) distance from other travellers at all times.
  4. You must wear a face mask to be able to gain access to the airport terminal building.
  5. Wash your hand and use hand sanitiser at regular intervals.
  6. People coming to pick up arriving passengers are advised to remain in their car until the passenger exits the airport terminal building.
  7. To protect yourself onboard: avoid touching surfaces unnecessarily and avoid touching people, in addition to wearing a face mask and using hand sanitisers.

Passenger Quarantine Protocol for Arrivals (Evacuees)

Pre-departure
  1. Provide COVID-19 PCR test result conducted within 2 weeks before departure (minimum of 5 days pre-boarding).
  2. You must test negative for COVID-19 before being allowed to board a flight.
  3. Fill the Health Declaration/Self Reporting and Sample Collection/Time allocation form onboard.
  4. Ensure all information provided are correct and verifiable.

On arrival
  1. Disembark from the flight in an orderly manner, systematically and in batches.
  2. Avoid overcrowding and proceed for health screening at point of entry.
  3. Submit all filled forms.
  4. Maintain non-pharmaceutical interventions (face mask wearing, hand hygiene and physical distancing)
  5. Submit passport at point of entry to Nigerian Immigration System’s Migrant Identification Data Analysis System (MIDAS).
  6. Self isolate for 14 days in the city/state of where the point of entry is located.
  7. If not resident in that city, passengers are to make accommodation arrangements on their own and bear the cost.
  8. Repeat COVID-19 PCR test within 72 hours of arrival at the Sample Collection Centre at the appointed time and date given by MIDAS.
  9. Persons who are unable to remain in Lagos or Abuja during the self isolation period may only be allowed to return to their state of residence if they test negative for COVID-19 and provide health officials with their full and correct contact details.
  10. Those who have completed the 14 days self isolation will undergo an exit interview and their details will be forwarded to Nigeria Immigration Service for the release of their passport.
  11. Persons who have finished the exit interview can collect retained passports in person or by special delivery (e.g. through DHL).
