Owing to concerns relating to COVID-19, incoming passengers from countries like South Africa are required to observe a mandatory quarantine period unless they are able to secure a waiver. South Africa is reported to have a new variant of COVID-19 which is easily transmissible when compared to the original strain. NFF’s inability to secure a waiver for the South Africans now means the fate of Rivers United towards advancing into the next round now hangs in the balance, subject to a CAF verdict, despite winning the first-leg 2-0 in South Africa. In an official statement via Twitter, CAF on Tuesday night, January 5, 2021, confirmed they had received an official letter from Nigerian football governing body, NFF, stating their inability to secure a waiver for the DSTV Premier League side.

The NFF, in an earlier statement from its Secretary-General, Ahmed Sanusi, requested CAF to consider the possibility of rescheduling the date and venue of the match.
‘The Nigeria Football Federation wish to kindly request the general secretary (CAF) to consider the postponement of the game and a possible rescheduling of both the date and venue of the match, with the possibility of staging the match in any Nigeria neighbouring countries with a little less stringent Covid-19 protocols.’ NFFSource: Premium Times Featured Image Source: Goal
