The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Saturday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo defeated Zambia 1-0 and qualified for the finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. The players were above everyone else the happiest after the match, following their successful qualification for next year’s rounds, especially those that have never been at the World cup will have a chance to feature for Nigeria next year.
Football like any other team sport is only possible with absolute team effort and every member of the team deserves praise for a job well done.
Throughout the course of the tournament up until now, there are players that have proven very exceptional in their performances at consecutive matches and have been very instrumental in keeping the Country on top of the Group B table, the likes of Skipper John Obi Mikel, O. Ighalo, Victor Moses and a few others.
Coach G. Rohr has expressed utmost satisfaction with the entire team throughout the qualification stage but has singled out goalkeeper Carl Ikeme for special praises.
Carl Ikeme is the former Eagles goalie suffering from Leukaemia and Rohr is hopeful that he will win his fight against the terminal illness and join the team in Russia come 2018.
Rohr told the media at the post-match briefing on Saturday;
“In Zambia a year ago, it was one man who saved us, our goalkeeper – Carl Ikeme. He brought us on the right way. We called him last night, he spoke to the team before the match and we promised to do it for him.
“We did it for Ikeme. That’s why I am really, really happy and we wish he will come with us to Russia next year”.
Get well soon Carl …
