CHAN: Super Eagles Back on Track with 4-2 Win Over Mozambique
Staff Writer
Despite a poor opening with a 2-1 loss to Mali on Saturday, the Super Eagles of Nigeria got back on track at the 2014 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in South Africa with a 4-2 victory over Mozambique on Wednesday.
The Eagles did not start the game against Mozambique on a good note as Dario Khan scored a free kick just 10 minutes into the game.
Nigeria’s Ifeanyi Ede equalised about a minute later by sending the ball to the back of the Mozambican net. About two minutes after its first goal, the Super Eagles, through Rabiu Ali, found the back of the net for its second goal, which brought the count to 2-1 in favour of Nigeria.
Twenty minutes into the game, Alberto Antonio Diogo of Mozambique found a way to level the scores by capitalising on a costly mistake by Nigeria’s goalie.
Mozambique would no longer score for the rest of the game as Nigeria found two more goals that gave it the much needed win.
Nigeria earned a penalty in the second half, which Ali converted from 12 yards.
Nanen Imenger, a substitute, sealed the victory after a lob pass late in the game, which kept the Mozambicans away from making a come-back.
Nigeria will square up against host South Africa in its final preliminary game on Sunday January 19.
