Afrobeat singer, Burna Boy, has won the BET award for Best International Act at the awards which held on Sunday, June 23, 2019, at the Microsoft Theatre, Los Angeles, USA.
The “African Giant” was nominated with Aka (South Africa), Aya Nakamura (France), Dave (Uk), Dosseh (France), Giggs (Uk), and Mr. Eazi (Nigeria) in the Best International act which he won.
The award was received by the singer’s mother and manager who admonished in her acceptance speech that every African in the diaspora should always remember that they were first African before they became anything else.
The singer, who was conspicuously unavailable to receive the award when announced, even though was at the event, later said in a tweet that he had stepped out for a drink when his category was called and was hence unable to receive the award himself.
By this achievement, Burna boy joins the list of Nigerian music stars to have won the award, including Davido, the 2018 winner.
Burna Boy, born Damini Ogulu in July 1991, rose to prominence in 2012 with the release of the lead single “Like to Party” from his debut album, L.I.F.E.
