Bronze Medal for Nigeria Quartet

Nigeria’s 4×400 women relay team has won a bronze medal at the World Relays in Nassau, Bahamas. The team which comprises of Regina George, Folasade Abugan, Omolara Omotoso and Patience Okon George finished behind their Jamaican and American counterparts. The team ran 3:23.41 to record Nigeria’s fastest time in the event since Sydney 2000 Olympics and third fastest in Nigeria’s history. Americans were a distant first in 3:21.73, leaving Jamaica and Nigeria in their wake to battle out for the second position; Jamaicans held on to usurp Nigeria in 3:23.26. Nigeria’s Regina George ran fastest time by any athlete in the whole race clocking 49.4seconds on the second leg. The medal is the first medal for Nigeria in athletics since 2008 Beijing Olympics. Team Nigeria had a horrid outing at the 2012 London Olympics where they finished the event without a medal. Few hours later, Regina George and Patience Okon George took to the track, alongside Dominique Duncan and Francesca Okwara for the women’s 4×200 metres relay. The team finished in 7th place but set a new national record of 1:33.71. The team is the first to represent Nigeria in the event at World stage.
