For the first time since the establishment of the University of Ibadan, 69 years ago, a graduate, Ozibo Ekele broke the jinx in the department of history by earning a First Class Honours with a Cumulative Grade Point Aggregate of 6.6 out of a maximum of 7.0. This was according to a statement made by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Idowu Olayinka, who stated this at the University’s convocation ceremony for the 2015/2016 graduates held at the university’s International Conference Centre, which also included the Distance Learning Centre.
Ekele who had studied Mass Communication at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka before coming to the Premier University to study History also believes UI is the only academic institution in the country that applies a different approach to teaching History.
While the best graduating student, Daniel Kenechuckwu Nkemelu who graduated from Computer Science, graduated with 7.0 out of the maximum points of 7.0.
The Vice-Chancellor according to Guardian Nigeria, listed the degrees; 186 convocating students graduated with a first class degree with 1,538 having a Second Class Upper division, 3,133 finished with a Second Class Lower division, while 434 made a third class and 81 got a pass and 257 were categorized as unclassified. He also took his time in defending the first class degrees, as he asserted that the institution still maintains very stringent and competitive mechanism for undergraduate admission and as such was very proud of all its graduates.
He expressed his belief in the standard of the University as the best and brightest, a fact he accredited to its position as it has consistently been listed in the Times Higher Education World University rankings as the only university in the country
ranked among the topmost 801-1,000 universities in the world.
