Our recommended book for the week comes from a
young, upcoming writer, Angel Okwuosa.
Her recently published book,
Homebound is a short prose that tells the story of life in Lagos from the point of view of an intelligent 11-year-0ld girl named Ona. The heroine is forced to move from the US to her home country, Nigeria with her family and goes through a series of interesting encounters after settling. She talks about everything she comes across – and we mean everything – from church life to boarding school experiences and even the loud, entertaining atmosphere of our parties, all told with a quirky and childlike sense of humour.
Readers are guaranteed to experience moments of nostalgia, connecting their personal memories to the stories the heroine shares. She also innocently brings to the forefront many issues to be thought through reflectively, the most important being the culture shocks experienced by Nigerians from the diaspora, and how they must come to terms with Nigeria being their motherland despite its many challenges.
The author, Angel Okwuosa is a Nigerian university student who’s currently studying law abroad, and yet, is steadily making a name for herself in our country’s creative industry. We wish her all the best in her future endeavours, and look forward to her future work.
