Book Review: Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

Title: Gone Girl Author: Gillian Flynn Genre: Thriller Publisher: Crown; 1st edition (June 5, 2012)   If you haven’t read the book ‘Gone Girl’, you are missing out on a masterpiece. However, being the nice girl that I am, I will try to take you on a mini journey into the lives of the phenomenal characters. Before you read this piece, I must warn: SPOILER ALERT! If you prefer to be in the dark while reading a book and enjoy the suspense it creates, go read it, then come back. But if you love spoilers, this is something for you. Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl is a psychological thriller novel that leaves the reader at the edge of their seat, turning page after page and at the end of the book satiated yet hungry for more. The book tells the story of a married couple, Nick and Amy who live together believing that they know each other but actually do not.  When Amy goes missing, all evidence points to Nick as the culprit leaving him with the almost impossible task of proving his innocence in this carefully knitted web of a whodunit story. Flynn takes the readers on a daring twist yet insidious reality on marriage. She is also able to successfully take the risk of switching narrators from the first person to third person narrative because her characters are distinct and convincing. Flynn is able to humanize Amy so well during the diary entries to such an extent that when it is revealed that Amy is a sociopath, the reader is already attached to her; it’s difficult not to root for the sociopath even when deceit is apparent. In this awesome thriller, Flynn carefully guides the reader’s eyes and mind into the life of sociopaths like Amy Dunne.   About the Writer: Seyi Oluyole is a freelance writer and screenwriter. She is an avid reader, loves to dance and works with children.
