Blackberry makers – Research in Motion – will open its first major office in Nigeria. This was revealed in a press conference in Lagos, yesterday, by the organization’s regional managing director for the Middle East and Africa, Robert Bose. He said that Nigeria is one of the fastest growing mobile markets in the world, and that the number of Nigeria smartphone users is expected to grow to 25 million by 2016, from 4 million in 2011.
According to RIM, two of every four smartphones in Nigeria are BlackBerry models, and there is the need to serve this market. RIM said it will collaborate with distributors to offer software upgrades for free, and it will also offer service to phones in its soon-to-be-opened Lagos office. This will be following in the footsteps of Nokia and Samsung, who have active sales and service offices in Nigeria.
