Back-to-School Checklist for Nigerian Parents

Back-to-School Checklist

Hey, Black Mom

Dear Parents, it’s September. Your children will be going back to school for a new academic session. While I do not hope to scare you, I believe you should be used to the feelings that come with September. After the long break in August, it’s time to get back into the school routine, ensuring your children are ready to hit the ground running. For most parents, the back-to-school checklist can be hectic to sort out, with so much to prepare and organize

So you don’t miss anything important in the back-to-school checklist, here’s a comprehensive checklist that covers all the essentials your children will need for school resumption.

1. School Supplies

One of the first things on your checklist should be school supplies. Start by taking inventory of what your children already have and what needs to be purchased. Basic items include notebooks, pens, pencils, rulers, erasers, and textbooks. For secondary school students, additional materials like graph books, scientific calculators, geometry sets, and art supplies might be required. A great tip is to buy these supplies early to avoid the last-minute rush and inflated prices. If you have more than one child, you may consider the idea of bulk purchases of school items. This can help save you money.

2. Check and Update School Uniforms

In Nigeria, school uniforms are a must, and your child needs to be looking sharp for the new session. Check the condition of their current uniforms, shoes, singlets, underwear, and socks. If they’ve outgrown their uniforms or if the clothes are worn out, now is the time to replace or mend them. You may want to get a few extra pairs of socks, underwear, and other essentials to keep your child well-stocked throughout the term.

3. School Fees and Payment Arrangements

Paying school fees is one of the biggest concerns for parents at the start of a new term. It’s important to confirm the total amount due, including tuition, registration fees, and any additional costs for books or extracurricular activities. Ensure that payments are made on time to avoid penalties. Some schools offer instalment payment plans, so you may consider discussing available options with the school administration if you need financial flexibility. Also don’t forget to always keep records of your payments to avoid any future disputes.

4. Health and Hygiene

A healthy child is a happy learner, so it’s important to ensure that your child is in good health before school resumes. Schedule a medical check-up if necessary and make sure their immunizations are up to date. Stock up on basic health supplies like Paracetamol and cold syrups. You may also consider handkerchiefs, tissues, and small hand sanitisers for your child’s personal use. Also, remind your child about the importance of good hygiene practices, such as washing hands after using the toilet, before meals, and after playing. Also, educate them on what to share and what not to share to avoid the spread of germs.

5. Transportation Plan for School Run

Whether your child takes the school bus or walks, or you drive them, it’s important to plan for a reliable means of transportation. If school bus, check the school bus schedules and confirm pick-up and drop-off times. If you drive your child, ensure your car is in good condition and consider alternatives for days when you might not be available. For parents considering public transport, have a conversation with your child on safety tips and review the safest routes with them, especially if they are old enough to go on their own.

6. Check For Unfinished School Work

Some schools often give out holiday assignments to students. Check with your child to know if he/she does not have any schoolwork that needs to be finished. Since September is a new academic session, this may not apply but it doesn’t cost a thing to confirm.

7. Meal Prep and Nutrition

With the stress that comes with school mornings, having a meal plan in place can help save you time on trying to figure out what to cook. Plan out their breakfast and also plan for healthy snacks and lunch options that are easy to pack and provide the necessary energy for an active school day. Batch cooking and prepping meals over the weekend can help reduce weekday stress and ensure your child has balanced meals throughout the week.

8. Mental and Emotional Preparation

Starting a new school year can be both exciting and stressful for children. Take some time to talk to your child about what to expect and how they feel about the upcoming term. Encourage them to share any concerns they might have, whether it’s about making new friends or handling the workload. Also, getting back into the school routine can be a challenge for kids. Start adjusting TV time, play time, and bedtimes a week or two before school resumes to help your child readjust. Re-establish study routines by setting up a designated study area at home and setting aside time for reading and homework. This helps ease the transition and sets the tone for a productive school year.
