The Super Falcons of Nigeria yesterday defeated their South African opponents 1-0 to progress to the finals of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations, currently taking place in Cameroun. The victory came through a goal scored in the second half of the match.

Desire Oparanozie’s fine free kick was enough to undo the efforts of an otherwise stubborn and resolute South African team. The Bayana Bayana proved to be more than a handful for the Falcons, forcing goalkeeper Alaba Jonathan to make a number of saves. In the end, Nigeria’s women overcame the challenge and set up a meeting with hosts Cameroun at the final.

In the other semi-final match, Cameroun defeated Ghana 1-0.

A Nigeria-Cameroun final had been predicted by many analysts before the tournament began. The Cameroonians, who impressed at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2015, are expected to give the Falcons a tough fight at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaounde on Saturday.

Nigeria will be playing for their eight AWCON title.
