ASUU Calls Off 36 Days Strike

After 36 days of dropping their tools, the Academic Staff Union of Universities announces a “conditional suspension” of the strike. This was stated by the ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi at a briefing at the Nigeria Labour Congress Secretariat. According to Ogunyemi, he expressed that the Union suspended the strike based on the deadline given to the Federal Government to meet its demand before the month of October.  Hence, all members are to resume work today,  September 19. He expressed that  ASUU’s resolve to shape a hitch-free academic calendar is established by the restraints the Union shows before embarking on the strike. The Union has devised a new Memorandum of Action, MoA to finalise their agreement. This was signed by the Federal Government delegation led by  Minister of  Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige. It occurred according to Punch Newspaper, after a four-hour meeting where both parties finalized their decisions The abrupt calling off of the strike is expected to proceed with the commencement of examination at various tertiary institutions.
