After participating in a series of virtual polio training sessions, journalists selected will receive funding to travel independently to African countries that are at the fore of polio eradication efforts and gather stories and interviews with survivors of polio, community members, health care workers, health authorities, and families. Journalists interested in travelling to the following countries will be given preference:
- Ethiopia
- Democratic Republic of the Congo
- Niger
- Madagascar
- Nigeria
- Chad
- Mozambique

The Foundation Polio Press Fellowship is designed to “provide professional journalists with the means to travel outside their country of residence to areas affected by polio and gather stories to raise global awareness about the importance of polio eradication work as well as the ways in which polio infrastructure can contribute to broader health goals.”
To be considered eligible for the fellowship:
- Interested journalists must submit an application that outlines their project proposal and budget.
- The application must reflect the journalist’s unique interest in polio eradication and may include the following themes:
- Advancements and innovations in polio vaccination and surveillance
- The relationship between gender and polio
- Barriers to reaching unvaccinated children
- The impact of climate change, misinformation, urbanization, conflict, and other global challenges on polio eradication.
- The applicant must demonstrate experience in producing and publishing similar news content for global and national outlets that are reputable.
- It is open to journalists from all nationalities.
- Stories may be published in other languages, but applicants are advised to have basic knowledge of the English language.
- The program is open to freelance journalists.
- Multi-person teams are encouraged to submit a joint project proposal; however, the award amount per project remains the same.

- The Gates Foundation provides funding for the fellowship. There are two award categories: small awards (below $5,000) and large awards (up to $10,000).
