The Claude Ake Visiting Chair Scholarships are designed for “social scientists from African universities who champion social justice and specialize in areas like war, peace, conflict resolution, human rights, democracy, and development.” Selected scholars will have the opportunity to pursue their research while contributing to the activities of the Department of Peace and Conflict Research of Uppsala University and the Nordic Africa Institute. Holders of the Claude Ake Visiting Chair program are expected to deliver a public lecture titled the “Claude Ake Memorial Lecture” at the end of their stay in Uppsala.

It is expected that the title, theme, and content of the lecture will be based on the research project carried out by the scholar while in Uppsala. Also, the topic of the lecture should “relate to the work of Claude Ake, for example, in terms of themes or issues covered, or in the theoretical or normative points of departure.” The paper should be made available in advance to seminar participants and lecture audiences and subsequently published jointly by the Department of Peace and Conflict Research and the Nordic Africa Institute.

Apart from a conducive environment for the chairholder’s research, he or she will also be opportune to lecture, hold seminars, and contribute to research at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research and the Nordic Africa Institute.
