NIMASA is organizing this essay competition in commemoration of World Maritime Day, which is themed ‘Sustainable Shipping for a Sustainable Planet.’ It is designed to spark the interest of young Nigerians in the maritime sector, and make them aware of the many opportunities that exist within it. Prizes received for the competition’s top essays will depend on what rank they achieve. There will be prizes for the top three participants, as well as consolation awards for the next seven entries. World Maritime Day is marked and celebrated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and its member states across the world. NIMASA is a government agency that regulates Nigerian shipping, maritime labour, and the country’s coastal waters. It also carries out inspections and provides search and rescue services.
Benefits
Top entries in this competition will receive the following prizes:- First Prize: ₦500,000 education grant, a laptop, and a plaque. The first placed person will also have their winning essay published in NIMASA’s magazine, The VOYAGE, and on the NIMASA website.
- Second Prize: ₦350,000 education grant, a laptop, and a plaque.
- Third Prize: ₦250,000 education grant, a laptop, and a plaque.
- Contestants placed fourth to tenth will get education grants of ₦100,000 each, and a plaque.

Eligibility
NIMASA expects persons who enter this competition to meet these conditions:- Be first or second-year students of Nigerian tertiary institutions.
- Scan original proof of studentship, including their letters of admission and student identity card, and submit them along with their essay.
- Their essay should be no longer than 1,200 words, double spaced in a Microsoft Word document and in font size 12.
- Include their name, telephone number, and email address at the end of their essay.
