All About Shawarma

When Shawarma was first introduced in Nigeria, it came as a joke’s brunt. Now, the snack is part of street foods in Nigeria. Shawarma is a slice of heaven here on Earth. It is a steamed or heated roll of pita bread/flat bread with a thinly sliced cut of meat. You have fillings wrapped in the bread like cucumber, beef, mayonnaise, tomato and so on. It is a Middle Eastern Arabic style sandwich usually composed of shaved lamb, goat, chicken, turkey, beef or a mixture of meat. It was developed in Bursa, by a cook named Hadji Iskender in the 19th century at Ottoman Bursa in the current day Turkey. This dish gets its name from the way it’s traditionally cooked. The Arabic word “shawarma” comes from a Turkish word that means “turning”. Shawarma is a popular fast nutrition across the Middle East, Europe, Caucasus and North Africa. It is fast attaining popularity in West Africa especially in Nigeria and Ghana where it is sold in street sides and fast food centers.  The Pita bread is high in protein and carbohydrate; its low water activity is such that it resists the growth of all microorganisms if stored properly. Even after being a mainstream dish, it was recently recognized eight years ago in Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary alongside other words. Well, whatever we claim, shawarma is our favourite healthy meal. A great way to start your own business is to invest in Shawarma.  That reminds me I always manage to run away from eating it while in school, I finally did this weekend and found out its onion’s free.
