Ace comedian Ali Baba and his wife, Mary have launched the Purple Girls Foundation to support girl-child education in the country. The launch and fundraiser for the foundation took place on Wednesday 11th July, in Lagos. It was held in celebration of the 50th Birthday of Mrs Mary Akpobome in Lagos.

Mrs Akpobome, at the event, said that the issue of girl child education has been one of concern and a matter of discussion at various levels. Consequently, the foundation was set up as an intervention for the collective expression of our humanity and to positively impact the society. According to her, “Our vision is to be the leading platform supporting and advocating access to education and leadership development for the girl-child in Nigeria.”

The Purple Girls Foundation aims at supporting girls with tuition, education and health insurance. It will also instil in them qualities and give them opportunities for a better life in the future. This, as a result, will positively transform the family, community and nation.

Present at the launch were Deputy Governor of Lagos State Dr Idiat Adebule; Permanent-Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Education represented by Mrs Yetunde Odejaiye; President, Wellbeing Foundation Africa, Mrs Toyin Saraki; and Director, Schools Education and Society, British Council, Nigeria, Mr Mohammed Ahmed. They took the time to decry the poor enrollment of the girl child in schools. They also commended the Akpobomes for their contribution to society’s transformation and uplifting families from poverty through their foundation.

In its first three years, the foundation will be providing support for indigent female children in three pilot states.
