Ailing second republic president, Dr Alex Ekwueme has been confirmed dead at a London clinic. Ekwueme was said to have died late Sunday night after battling with what his family declared as a chest infection. The sad event occurred at exactly 10:00 pm on Sunday, 19
th November 2017.
He had earlier suffered from a stroke two weeks ago and was stabilised in Enugu hospital, before a Federal Government Ambulance aircraft flew him to London on November 12, by the orders of current President Muhammadu Buhari.
Ekwueme was the Vice President in 1979 when Alhaji Shehu Shagari was President during Nigeria’s second republic. He held the position till 1983 when the Shagari administration was overthrown in a military coup in December 1983.
Professor Laz Ekwueme, the victim’s brother, said in his statement: “The Ekwueme family regrets to announce the peaceful passing away of their patriarch, the former Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme GCON,”
