Akpabio, Barau Emerge Senate President And Deputy Senate President

In a highly anticipated election, the former governor of Akwa Ibom, Senator Godswill Akpabio, emerged victorious as he was elected as the President of the 10th Senate. With an impressive tally of 63 votes, Senator Akpabio defeated his opponent, Senator Abdul’aziz Yari, who secured 46 votes.

The nomination process commenced with Senator Abdul’aziz Yari and Senator Godswill Akpabio being put forward as candidates. After receiving the nominations, the Clerk of the Senate officially closed the nominations as there were no further candidates. The intense contest primarily revolved around Senator Yari, the former governor of Zamfara State, and Senator Akpabio, a former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and ex-governor of Akwa Ibom State. Ultimately, Senator Akpabio’s popularity and support propelled him to victory, succeeding Ahmad Lawan as the Senate President.

In a separate development, Senator Dave Umahi nominated Senator Jibrin Barau for the position of Deputy Senate President. Senator Barau’s credentials were read out, and he graciously accepted the nomination. With no other nominations put forward, the Clerk of the Red Chamber declared Senator Jibrin Barau as the Deputy Senate President without opposition. Following his successful nomination, Senator Barau took the oath of office and assumed the role of Deputy Senate President for the 10th National Assembly, succeeding Ovie Omo-Agege. The swearing-in ceremony marked the beginning of his tenure, as he joined Senator Akpabio in leading the Senate with dedication and integrity.
