The Spanish-based stars were outstanding in Nigeria’s campaign at the continental showpiece.
Nigerian national women’s football team stars, Rasheedat Ajibade and Osinachi Ohale, have been named in the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Best XI. The duo was instrumental to Nigeria’s campaign at the tournament which saw them qualify for the 2023 Women’s World Cup by reaching the semi-final.
In the absence of Asisat Oshoala who got injured after Nigeria’s first game against South Africa, Ajibade who plies her trade with Athletico Madrid in Spain led the Nigerian attack, ending the tournament as joint top scorer with three goals and two assists in her five games for the nine-time African champions.
Deportivo Alaves of Spain central back Osinachi Ohale featured in all six games for the Super Falcons. Ohale’s stronghold in the defence saw her named Woman-of-the-Match in Nigeria’s 4-0 win over Burundi in the country’s last group game.
2022 WAFCON champions, South Africa, dominated the tournament XI. The Banyana Banyana who just got their first WAFCON title in history has four players in the best XI shortlist. Hosts Morocco who finished second in the 2022 WAFCON after a 1-0 loss to South Africa in the final, have three Atlas Lionesses in the tournament XI, while third place winners Zambia have two players in the list just like Nigeria.
Nigeria will look towards improving on their outing in the WAFCON when preparations commence for the World Cup.
