The People of Agege and all of Lagos have an exciting weekend planned out for them as the finals of the 2017 Aiteo Cup tournament will hold in the Agege Stadium on Sunday 15th October 2017.
Niger Tornadoes and Akwa United will both be making a second appearance at the finals of the Aiteo Cup, where they won the titles in the year 2000 and 2015 respectively.
Niger Tornadoes defeated current Aiteo Cup holders FC Ifeanyi-Ubah 4-3 on aggregate while Akwa were victors 3-2 on aggregate to proceed to the finals on Sunday.
Players have tipped Akwa United to take the championship and dominate the Niger Tornadoes on Sunday with words of encouragement and statistical analysis on the quality of players on-board.
Akwa United Midfielder Afiz Aremu had this to say to CS “We want to bounce back as we failed to win a continental ticket from the league but now we have a chance and if we win it will be good for us. We are confident, we have a strong team but they have a strong team also because they beat top teams to get to the final as well, we haven’t won the game yet, we haven’t played yet. We are focused. We know it is going to be difficult. We know it is just one game, one final and we know that finals are always tough.”
Former Super Eagles striker Barnabas Imenger also had this to say to CS team “I consider them favourites especially for the fact that they have players in the Super Eagles. They recruited good players and you could see from their Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) run in which they finished fourth how good the team are.”
On Sunday will determine the fate of both teams, one will be champion and the other will be second place, let’s hope it doesn’t pan out the same as what we saw in the Nigeria vs Zambia prematch talks and what really happened during the matchup.
Akwa United claimed 60 points from 38 matches in the 2016/2017 season while Tornadoes were 11th on the log with 54 points.
