CSKA were forced to put in extra work three minutes before the end of normal time when Swedish midfielder Pontus Wernbloom was dismissed for a dangerous challenge on Ivory Coast striker Lacina Traore.
Brazilian striker, Vagner Love almost won the game in extra time for CSKA Moscow but the scoreline remained 1-all after 90minutes plus extra-time and the game went into a penalty shoot-out to ascertain the winners.
