Schools are resuming, this means back to school lunches, packing your kids’ lunch ensures that they eat safe and healthy meals, it also saves you money.
Packing a school lunch can be tiring, I know this because I pack my cousins’ lunch. It’s no small task trying to put together a healthy meal that will get them through the day and most importantly a meal that they want to eat, and I’m sure no parent will want to see a lunchbox returned untouched. These tips ease my stress with packing their lunches.
-
Get your child involved
They’re the ones eating it, so it’s only fair to take their suggestions seriously, let them be involved in choosing what they want to eat, this does not imply that they have full reign over the contents of their lunch box, give them options to choose from, involve them in shopping for ingredients and you can use that opportunity to educate them on healthy food choices, that way they always pick the right thing to eat, it’ll also make your job easier and the kids will take pride eating a meal they helped pick.
-
Start planning on time
Take time on Sundays to plan out the kids’ lunch for the week. Cut the vegetables you’ll be needing for that week into a reusable container and store in the fridge, bake your cookies and store. That way you’ll avoid the morning bustle of trying to figure out what to pack. You can also try out fun recipes.
- Choose simple easy to eat meal
Lunchtime is a social time for kids, the aim is to eat quickly and go outside and play. So make lunch easy to eat. Don’t go packing a three-course meal 😀
- Water
Water should be the drink of choice for your child. Limit the amount of carbonated drinks you pack for your kids. If your child is going to have a drink, then I’ll recommend homemade fruit juice.
- Invest in a good lunch box
Buy a good lunch box/bag that will keep your kids food from spilling and getting smudged, and also ensure that meals will remain fresh and hot.
