3 Steps to Maintaining Focus and Overcoming Distraction

What’s that over there? Oh no, look back there! Wait, what’s behind that? How do you feel after reading that sentence? Confused, I would assume. What I have tried to creatively illustrate is the powerful force of distraction and the confusion it can create. Fortunately, there is a force, if efficiently utilized, that is more powerful than distraction; focus. We are all born dreamers and all have the capacity to conceive great ideas. I believe the only difference between someone whose dreams only ever pass by in clouds, and the person whose dreams thrust themselves into reality is unwavering focus. Focus is defined as;

The state or quality of having or producing clear visual definition.”

If you’re struggling to stick to one idea and execute it, seem endlessly busy yet can’t seem complete key tasks, or simply can’t pay attention and have placed yourself at the top of the ‘time waster’ list, then these three tips may help you. 1. Practice concentration. When you were a child, I’m sure ‘concentrate!’ was one of the first words you were accustomed to. Have you ever wondered why teachers and parents were so intent on teaching you how to concentrate? I believe it is because the impossible can be attained through concentration. To concentrate is to focus all of your attention on one thing, therefore to concentrate is to eliminate all distraction. 2. Work on one thing at a time. Some are blessed with that gift famously known as multi-tasking, therefore doing five things at once proves effective for them. On the contrary, if you’re anything like me, doing five things at once results in first time use of the dormant fire extinguisher in your kitchen. Ideally, it is best to focus on one thing at a time. 3. Use your imagination. Focus requires that you build a story around that object that you’re trying to bring to life. Envision where you’re going; think about how it smells, what colours it’s clothed in, what it looks like at the break of day, and how it will impact the world around you. Build such a story around the object that you become consumed by the vision of what you want to create. This will help you magnify your focus and shrink everything else. Now that you have these three tips up your sleeve, FOCUS!
