A 25-year old lady has set a new academic record during the 10th convocation of  Babcock University, Ilesan-Remo, Ogun State recently. Opeyemi Sodipe has become the first graduate of Babcock University to bag a PhD, in Business Information, at the young age of 25 years. It was a day of many triumphs as another academic record was also set, and the Medical School of the institution – named after renowned neurosurgeon, Dr Benjamin S. Carson senior –  was inaugurated. Gilbert Oladeinbo, a 20-year old young man, bagged a degree in Law, emerging the all-time best graduating student of the institution after scoring a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.92 on a 5.0 scale. Her journey to excellence, though motivational, was not as easy. According to reports, Sodipe started out being described as a dull student. Things changed when she was in JSS 3. She failed a test and was called an olodo, meaning a dullard in Yoruba language, in front of her classmates. This embarrassment – coupled with her mother’s admonition and encouragement – prompted the young girl to pray, and study harder. Since that incident she has never looked back, graduating in 2006 from Babcock, with a degree in Information Science and a CGPA of 4.4, finishing as the best graduating student in her class. When asked what her future ambition was she said she would love to become a professor. “I love teaching just like my mother. Even some of my classmates during my undergraduate days recognised this talent in me as they always referred to me as a professor,” she said. As the saying goes that success comes when preparation meets opportunity, Sodipe’s achievement and dreams have fit in well with the plan at Babcok University, where first class graduates of the institution are encouraged to take up teaching. She has already been offered a job as an assistant lecturer in the university. Aside these two high-achieving students, the university also graduated 60 students, who acquired first class degrees in various disciplines among the 1,370 graduands.   Written with reports from Punch.
