2023 Elections: Fresh Voter Registration Hits 10.4 Million

Nigerians have trooped to registration centres to partake in the exercise as they look towards deciding their future in 2023.

As Nigerians continue to partake in the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that fresh registration hit 10,487,972 by 7:00 am on Monday, June 27, 2022. INEC made the figures public during a CVR Update released on Monday night in Abuja. The electoral body also disclosed that 8,631,696 registrants have completed the registration process (3,250,449 online and 5,381,247 physical registrations).

Further, the gender breakdown from the release shows that 4,292,690 males and 4,339,006 females have completed the process. The statistics also revealed that a total youth population of 6,081,456 and 67,171 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) has completed registration. Also, the update shows that INEC as of 7:00 am on Monday received 23,560,043 applications inclusive of requests for replacement of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), updates of voter information records, voter transfer, and other issues.

Information released by INEC disclosed that Nigeria’s 84 million voting population is 11 million voters more than 14 other countries in West Africa and the Sahel region. This information was made public by the chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu while welcoming a team of special representatives of the United Nations Secretary-General led by the Head of the UN Office in West Africa and the Sahel region at INEC headquarters.

Prof. Yakubu while pointing out the importance of Nigeria in the development of democracy in West Africa and the entire African continent, noted that the total number of registered voters in the remaining 14 West African countries and the Sahel is 73 million, 11 million less than Nigeria’s 84 million.

Emphasizing Nigeria’s strategic importance in the development of the African democratic system, Professor Yakubu assured the UN representatives that INEC “will do what is right on the basis of the law, while the ultimate choice will be made by Nigerians on who they will vote for.
