2023 AFCON Qualifiers: Eagles Set To Face Mauritius

The Super Eagles will be looking to qualify for the 2023 AFCON after failing to book a place in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Nigeria is now set to play Mauritius instead of Sao Tome and Principe, in one of their Group A qualifier matches.

What Happened?

Recently, Sao Tome and Principe were stripped of their qualifier spot after fielding an ineligible player in their clash against Mauritius.

Hence, Nigeria will play Mauritius in their second qualifier game on June 13, 2022.

The replacement, however, was confirmed by the verified Twitter handle of the Super Eagles on Monday, May 16, 2022.

“We will now play Mauritius in our 2nd match of the AFCON 2023 qualifiers,”

a statement on the Twitter page of the three-time African champions confirmed.

When Are The 2023 AFCON Qualifiers Commencing?

Furthermore, Nigeria will square off against Sierra Leone in their first group game on June 9, 2022, in Nigeria before facing Mauritius for their second leg on June 13.

Finally, two teams are expected to qualify from each group for the 2023 AFCON finals. The tournament is to be held in Cote d’ Ivoire, 38 years after they last hosted in which Cameroun won.
