Nigerian national women’s football team, the Super Falcons, bounced back from their 2-1 defeat against South Africa in their first 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations game to beat Botswana 2-0 in their second game on Thursday, June 7, 2022, in the Moulay Hassan FUS Stadium.
A pass from HalimatAyinde met IfeomaOnumonu well to slot in Nigeria’s first goal in the 21st minute of the game. Nigeria would command proceedings in the game but fail to find the back of the net until the second half when substitute Christy Ucheibe headed in the second goal. The win puts Nigeria in second place in Group C, three points behind South Africa as the Falcons confront Burundi on Sunday, July 10, in quest of a quarter-final ticket.
Nigeria improved significantly from their performance in the first game as coach Randy Waldrum made important changes to the starting eleven. Chiamaka Nnadozie started in the goal alongside Francesca Orgeda, Ngozi Okobi and Toni Payne. Christy Ucheibe’s strike was her debut goal for the nine-time African champions and she did not hide her delight in scoring for the biggest African women’s national team.
“I am so proud to have scored my first goal for the Super Falcons and helped the team secure this important victory,’’ Ucheibe’s Tweet said.
Semifinalists from the tournament will pick the tickets for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Randy Waldrum and his girls will be aiming to make it to the last four.
