After a shaky start to the tournament, the nine-time African champions have re-established dominance on the continental front.
Nigerian national women’s football team, the Super Falcons, booked their ticket to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup after beating Cameroun in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Thursday, July 14, 2022. The Randy Waldrum-led side beat the Central Africans 1-0 at the Stade Mohamed V, Casablanca, courtesy of a Rasheedat Ajibade header in the 58th minute of the encounter. Hosts Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, and Zambia are the top four teams and will represent Africa at the 2023 Women’s World Cup to be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
Head coach Randy Waldrum did not fail to express his excitement at his girls for defying all odds to make it to the semifinals after a shaky start to the tournament which saw them lose their first game against the BanyanaBanyana of South Africa.
“I’m proud of my team. The most difficult task for us is to get to this point. We had difficulties from the beginning to overcome pitfalls. But the players defended themselves and found a way to win. Honestly, we are very excited to have qualified for the World Cup.”

The Super Falcons will be confronting the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco in the semifinal on Monday, July 18, 2022, while Zambia and South Africa will square off in the other semifinal encounter. Nigeria is aiming for a record-extending tenth AWCON title and will be hoping to beat Morocco to advance to the final and defend their 2019 AWCON title.
